Very sad news, my Dad Alan worked for many years with John and Gordon recovering many aircraft. I knew John long before I joined BCAL as he used to look after me when I went fishing with Horley Piscatorial Society. Many a time John would lift me and my fishing tackle over a gate or style. He also fitted S/S brake pipes and exhaust on my Ford Escort which he kept in tip top condition. Many happy memories. Condolences to his family and friends. RIP John, tight lines. Steve.

I first new John way back in the 1950s with Transair. He was one of the most enthusiastic people I ever met it didn't matter what job he was given he would simply attack it. I remember on one occasion we had a problem on the ramp with a Britannia aircraft  John and his mate John Buck  shot off down to the hangars and all you could see was John's legs almost vertical between the 2 front wheels of a Brit robbing a part of the landing gear then rushed off back up to the ramp.

Another is when I was seconded to Air Malawi along with 3 others Trev Adams, Rob Jewitt and Dave Record. Trev and I were in the Seychelles with the VC10 that suffered a broken leading edge slat  John arrived with a couple of other guys from Gatwick to give us a hand, Trev had organised with the chef from the airport restaurant to lay on his best meal for these engineers, he gave them Octopus a local dish when John saw it he said I want chicken. John had chicken then set to work straight away having just arrived from LGW you could not stop him working. Another one of the good guys who will be sadly missed.

Sad news, condolences to Barbara and his family. I worked on the same shift as John 'The Bear' always in the thick things as far as work was concerned. A very good friend to have on your side, God bless him,  R.I.P. John.
