Ivan Vickers : Captain
Sadly we learn that Ivan, a former Captain, passed away over the weekend of 19/20th August 2023 in his care home. My sincere condolences go out to Ivan's family, friends and former colleagues.
Ivan flew a return flight on 6th Jan 1977 from Gatwick to Le Touquet, it was aboard 707 G-AWWD, and a special flight for the Golden Lion Children's Trust where I understand all the crew were volunteers to give the kids a great day out.

Ivan Remembered
From Jean Carlyle-Lyon
On a trip to South America, we had a crew party, as you do. Somebody got into Ivan's room and stole his trousers. The following morning, I went down for breakfast and Ivan was standing in the lobby in his full uniform, pipe etc. BUT no trousers. I said "Ivan, what are you doing" He just said "well, someone has stolen my trousers"!! Trish Stafford who was also on this trip with the trousers!!

The best trip I ever did was over 40 years ago with Capt Ivan Vickers, FO Graeme Crew and CSD Barbara Clough to SJU and EIS on a Dakota with the door held by string and Ivan crossing his fingers as we took off. We sailed on a 70ft schooner around the BVI‘s I will never forget the sight of Ivan swimming off with his pipe in his mouth for ages until he reappeared as if nothing was amiss! The loveliest man, fly high Ivan

I was with the GLCT then and arranged the handling in Le Touquet of the flight. Capt Hoppy Hopkins was Mayor of Le Touquet at the time and met Thelma and I to introduce us to everyone. (We drove over for the pre flight set up via the car ferry). We had to get the grass cut either side of the runway as the outboard engines hung over the sides. I asked if they had an airstart (just in case) and they took me to a hangar where they kept it. It looked new but when I asked they said it was 4 years old but never used. The airport had never had anything as big as a 707 and they wanted to park it right up beside the terminal for photos but we suggested not as on departure we could have blown the windows out. Thelma and I then flew over with the flight later. When we got back everyone went to the Wingspan (as you do). The Flight crew thanked us for our support but suggested we should never again plan a 707 operation in Le Touquet. I was on the flight deck and it was a bit hairy on landing and take off. I guess Ivan was probably an FO at the time? RIP. Fly high mate.
From Alastair Ferguson: My condolences, Ivan was a very nice gentleman

I send condolences to his family. We go back a long way to when Ivan was a 1st Officer on BAC 1-11s with Martin Mann and John Bulliegh, young pilots flying with BUA paying their way, all good fellows to work with. Happy memories working on the Ramp. R.I.P Ivan.
From Charles Powell
I first met Ivan when he was part of a small team of 5 pilots who were selected to operate the Chieftain aircraft we operated on scheduled flights to Birmingham in early 1970's. They were trained for this largely single pilot work by Capt Eric Rowley. After that I met Ivan many times down route and much enjoyed his company. He operated our last scheduled flight from Nairobi to Gatwick in 1976.
