Captain Henry "Harry" Saunderson

Henry Somerset Saunderson of Edgewater, Maryland, USA passed away peacefully on 14 September 2016, following a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Henry (fondly known as Harry) was the beloved husband of Patricia; father of Mark, Clive and William; and grandfather of Christopher and Marina.

Henry was born on 4 October 1930 in New York City to British immigrant parents, Robert and Isabelle Saunderson, before they returned to the UK during the Great Depression.  An adventurer from a young man, Henry served in the elite Parachute Regiment in the British Army, before commencing a career as a commercial pilot spanning over thirty years, where he initially flew the air bridge from England to Continental Europe.  After many years with British Caledonian, he retired as a Training Captain, certifying pilots for British Airways.

In retirement, Henry had the opportunity to achieve his other ambition of sailing the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, with his wife Patricia and their friends.  On moving to the United States in 2005, Henry remained a keen sailor, keeping a boat at Holiday Point Marina, Edgewater and enjoying all that the Chesapeake Bay has to offer.

Henry's service was held on 27 September 2016 at St James' Parish Church Cemetery, Lothian in Maryland, USA. The family dedicated a tree in the cemetery in Henry's memory.
