Sadly I have learnt that Captain Eric Saunders has passed away. He collapsed and was taken to St Georges in Tooting but did not recover.
My sincere condolences go out to his family, friends and former colleagues at this difficult time.
Eric was a very popular Captain and well liked commander. He was very active and was at the Flight Deck Reunion in Sept 2017, where the photo to the left was taken. Eric with Gloria Martin.

RIP Eric, I remember standing with him on the small terminal area at Rotterdam during the winter of 68/69 we had just got instructions for operations 1-11 T/O on snow, this involved working out the density of the snow by making snow balls!! We both wandered around engaged in this scientific task with the passengers looking on through the windows.

Really sorry to hear of Eric’s passing last week, he was a great skipper to fly with and was in fact the first BCAL Captain I ever did a trip with [to LAX], as a nervous passenger [then] he had me up on the flight deck for about 4 hours prior to landing and after that I never looked back. Funnily enough in later years Eric became a family friend through my wife Cathy, as she had grown up knowing Eric as a child, and will remember his humour and welcoming nature even managed to go sailing with him on the yacht he shared with Cathy’s dad. RIP Eric, sadly for me, and I am sure those of you that knew Eric and Barbara, the BCAL family has lost two wonderful characters of that unforgettable period
From Tracey Washington-Jones
My dad, Jimmy Greengrass, was very fond of Eric. Please accept our family condolences and thoughts at this difficult time
From Tricia Meadows : Lovely Captain - condolences to the family.
From Fiona Cameron : So sorry to hear this news. They were so great together. Condolences to Gloria and the family
From Mark Cobley : Great to fly with, condolences to Gloria, family & friends, R.I.P
From Trevor Warburton : Lovely bloke
From Chris Williams : I worked with Eric when he was TriStar Manager at Caledonian Airways & I was the Senior Training Captain (BA) on that Fleet. We flew John Major to see Trudeau & Bush Seniors in the ‘90’s. I eventually took over from Eric when he finally retired. I learned subsequently that he had recommended me. He was very committed to all the crews & making things run as smoothly as possible in the mayhem that often broke out around us. I had a great deal of respect for him, and he was a good bloke as well!
From Angela Fordham : RIP Eric x
