David was the skipper when we operated out of Recife back to the UK. Half way across the Atlantic I was informed over the radio that shortly after take off Christine (nee Borton) had given birth to our son (David). David announced the news to the passengers after landing and ordered drinks for the crew. He also arranged a car to take me from the aircraft via express customs clearance to my car so I could get to the hospital in Eastbourne ASAP. That just shows what a gentleman David was. My condolences to his family. RIP David.

From Phil Benson
Dave was one of my favourite Captains to fly with. He was such a gentle, laid back sort of chap with a lovely sense of humour. He had a reputation for being so laid back that he would on occasions, appear to fall asleep. I remember the old John Wilson telling me a story that he was doing a flight from Jersey to Gatwick on a 1-11 with Dave as his Captain. It was John's sector. Dave appeared to nod off in the (very short) cruise. That meant that John had to fly and navigate the aeroplane as well as doing the non-handling pilot's duties too (answering the radio and keeping the paperwork up to date) that Dave should have been doing. John was so incensed that he decided to wake Dave up by testing the APU fire bell that has the same noise as an engine fire warning. Dave woke up with a start and wasn't very happy about being woken up to what appeared to be an emergency.

Dave  lived  in  my  local  area  for  some  time  and  we  commuted down  from  Teesside on BMA many  times. His  funeral  was  at  Barningham, and my village  cricket team  played  there  a few days later and I will visit  the  churchyard  shortly.
