The Boeing 747
Initially, G-BDPZ, was leased to cover a short delay in the delivery of DC10, G-BFGI, this 747 was wet leased and flew with BA flight crew.

Though the DC10 was BCal's main long haul fleet aircraft, certain routes soon were so busy that a larger aircraft was needed. At one point ten DC10 services were flying weekly to Nigeria, and they were full, soon G-BJXN, Mungo Park, joined the fleet and started to fly six services a week, with DC10's continuing on the other four services.

Slowly more 747's were added, and started to fly the principal routes. DC10's flew the first New York service, but soon a 747-combi, G-HUGE took over the route, with its huge cargo capacity in the holds as well as its main deck baggage capacity.

G-GLYN and G-NIGB arrived from Wardair Canada, and the last to arrive was G-CITB in 1987.

By the end on 1987 there were five 747's in service, all series 200's, and they were targeted were extra capacity was needed. Additionally a Sabena 747-combi was used in a code share on the Atlanta run.
